Ferrari's 'home' circuit is gloriously situated in a charming park where the verdant hills of Tuscany meet the storied plain of Lombardy. The scenic venue's racing route rushes through splendid examples of these picturesque environments, twisting up among the farmyards and hillside vineyards then plunging down into the valley to run adjacent to the Santerno river and into the urban outskirts of the ancient Roman town of Imola.
Named in honour of the most famous name in racing and his son - and located in the heart of Ferrari's home territory - the storied circuit located in Italy's glorious Emilia Romagna region provides vivid testimony to the country's profound passion for motorsport. The venerable venue hosted F1 races from 1980 to 2006 featuring both both triumph and tragedy. While many famous drivers distinguished themselves here, it will always be associated with the fatal accidents in 1994 that claimed the lives of both Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna.
For safety reasons changes have been made to the circuit's configuration but the undulating twists and turns that form the essence of its character remain - not designed by a computer, but flowing naturally, following the contours of the ancient land. The corner names - Tamburello (where Senna died), Villeneuve (where Gilles Villeneuve survived a huge accident in 1980 and where Roland Ratzenberger died), Tosa, Piratella, Acque Minerali, Variante Alta, Rivazza, Variante Bassa, Traguardo - have a history accumulated over several decades of Grand Prix racing.
Indeed, the tradition of racing here is arguably older than anywhere in the world. In 80 BC, when the town of Imola was known as Forum Cornelii, a Roman amphitheatre first held races for chariots, each drawn by two snorting horses. In the year 2024, with Power Units in 20 F1 cars generating horsepower in excess of 20,000 speeding steeds the Gran Premio Dell' Emilia Romagna at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, is bound to be a splendid showcase for whatever modern F1 has to offer.
