Monaco is by far the slowest F1 circuit but the hazards inherent in its desperately confined configuration makes the danger factor, for drivers and spectators, greater than anywhere else. Clues to the potential for disaster can be found in the elaborate safety measures laid on by the organizers (the following numbers are from a few years ago). Positioned around the 3.337km 19-corner circuit are 650 track marshals, 620 security personnel 92 medical personnel (doctors, nurses, first aid workers) and 120 professional firemen. At the disposal of these people are 29 emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire trucks, rescue cars) plus several rescue boats with frogmen (to fish anyone out of the harbour) and several helicopters. 10 cranes are strategically located to remove disabled race cars. The firefighters have 800 extinguishers (one every 15 meters around the circuit) and a foam/water cannon stationed near the pits (using water from the Olympic swimming pool) can fight a major conflagration for 40 minutes. Awaiting emergency cases are 3 advanced medical stations, 3 medical centres and the nearby Princess Grace Hospital..
